Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first became interested in playing the ukulele?

Anne:  I learned how to play ukulele at a music therapy conference about 10 years ago and was able to utilize it in therapy sessions with a number of my clients, particularly children with developmental disabilities.  For example, I had one client ~ a 5-year-old with Down Syndrome ~ who absolutely loved singing and strumming his ukulele (which I had tuned to an open C chord) while we worked on developing fine motor, speech, social, and cognitive skills.

Gerry: I played guitar for many years, so when Anne started playing, I thought I’d give it a try.

What is your favorite song to play on the ukulele, and why does it hold special meaning for you?

Anne: I have many favorite songs to play on the ukulele ~ I am challenging myself to learn some new repertoire, though.  I am currently working on “Havana” by Camila Cabello and “White Flag” by Dido.

Gerry: Four Strong Winds

Have you participated in any memorable performances or events with the Vancouver Ukulele Club WA? If so, could you share a highlight?

Anne:  My favorite events have been our informal gatherings at Washougal Waterfront Park and Seize The Bagel.  It was so fun to make music in a public space that could be enjoyed by passersby as well as our own group, and it allowed us to really get to know one another.

Gerry: I really enjoyed playing with the residents at Truewood a year or two ago.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to learn the ukulele?

Anne: My advice would be to just keep playing!  If you only know a C chord, come to the group and just play that!  Then gradually learn the other chords. And consider taking the beginner class that our founder Coleen put together ~ it’s a great way to learn in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Gerry:  Have fun and don’t take it too seriously. Play songs that YOU like.

How has being a member of the Vancouver Ukulele Club WA impacted your musical journey and personal growth?

Both: Our favorite part of being involved in VUC is the people!  We came to Coleen’s first couple of meetings back in early 2020 before the COVID lockdown, then continued playing together when things began to open up again.  About 8 or 9 of us played in the Trapedero Room with masks on and windows open back then, and we’re happy to see the group now growing and thriving 5 years later!
